13 December 2004

  • Seniors
We ended our season last weekend on a high with promotion to Division 1A after defeating Carrigallen in a play-off last Saturday afternoon in Aughawillan by 3-10 to 0-8. The game itself lacked the same zip as the final played the previous week with both sides slow out of the blocks however the Carrigallen challenge was killed off with three goals in quick succession before halftime. The team and scorers were – Stephen Guckian, Fergal Meehan, Gerry Winters, David McGirl, Aidan Bohan, Barry Doyle, Enda McKeon, Karl Scollan, Niall Foley, Connor Doherty (1-3) 2F, Christy Carroll (0-1), Gearoid Foley (1-0), James Gill (1-0), Dara McKiernan (0-2) and Shane Foley (0-4). Subs Used – Micheal Earley, Aidan McKiernan and Adrian Lee.
  • Highlanders v Lowlanders
No sooner had the league and championship been done and dusted for 2004 last Saturday than most players attentions turned to what has become an annual “grudge match” between the men from the highlands and the boys from the lowlands. As we speak game plans are been hatched and the usual coaxing of former stars out of retirement for this game has begun. The two sides are evenly matched meaning a tight game is on the cards. Currently the Lowlanders lead the way with two wins since first game was staged three years ago with the highlanders with one win to their name. St Stephens Day is the date with Kiltubrid park the venue.
  • Birthdays x3
Happy birthday to one of the clubs elder supporters Jim Tighe who celebrated his 90th Birthday with family and friends last week. Happy birthday also to Stephen Guckian and Micheal Earley who both celebrated their 21st birthdays last weekend.

06 December 2004

  • Seniors
We created history last Sunday after our senior team won the clubs first ever senior title in the Division 1B league final against Glencar/Manorhamilton on a score line of 1-11 to 0-8 in Dromod last Sunday. In what was an evenly contested game of football the game took a big twist near the end of the first half when Connor Doherty’s speculative freekick from 45yards caught the Manorhamilton keeper by surprise to end up in the back of the net. The game will be remembered for it being littered with many fines scores from both teams on a day when both teams made light of slippery conditions to serve up a good game of football. The team and scorers on the day were – Noel Gill, Fergal Meehan, Gerry Winters, David McGirl, Aidan Bohan (0-1), Barry Doyle, Enda McKeon, Karl Scollan, Niall Foley (0-1), Connor Doherty (1-2) 2F, Christy Carroll ((0-2), James Gill (0-1) 1F, Gearoid Foley, Dara McKiernan ((0-3) and Shane Foley (0-1). Subs used – Adrain Lee and Aidan McKiernan. Finally many thanks to the great turn out of support on Sunday and to the Foley family Keshcarrigan who provided refreshments after the game.

Following a good win over Drumkeerin last Sunday our Seniors play Glencar-Manor next Sunday in the Div 1B final in Dromod with a 2pm throw in. Whatever the result on Sunday we still have to play Carrigallen the league leaders to decide who goes up to Div 1A. This game has been fixed for Saturday 11th December at 2 pm in Aughawillan.

  • Broadband in Kiltubrid:
Currently there is no broadband service in the Kiltubrid area but this may change as an affordable and practical community broadband solution is available. However before the possible introduction of a service we must first establish the demand for provision of broadband service for homes and businesses in the area. It is vital that those interested in getting broadband services make contact immediately as the service providers interested in our area wish to act quickly. If you are interested please contact Brendan Doyle. Don’t underestimate the many benefits of having broadband in your home or business.

It is important that anyone with an interest or a particular view on the betterment of football in the county, get a copy and make their views known to the club executive so that it can be discussed and possibly followed through to county convention in the form a motion or motions. A lot of time and effort has been put into this document which has a number of recommendations which can be taken on board whole or in part or in adjusted form or maybe everything as it stands. The document is not to be seen as the league and championship gospel, but as a possible guideline to some future adjustments in the current format.

  • Kiltubrid Ladies Football Notes
  • Senior B Championship Final
Last Sunday morning, we took on Bornacoola, in the Senior B Final, played in Dromod on lovely sunny morning. Kiltubrid opened the scoring with a point from Lisa McWeeney, but our lead was short-lived as Bornacoola responded with a goal and added 4 further points. Kitubrid kept in the game with two Regina Bohan points, to leave the half time score 1-4 to 0-3 in favour of Bornacoola. Rosey McCabe replaced an injured Claire Judge early n the game. The second half was a different story, as Kiltubrid started playing much better football, knowing what they had to do. Siobhain Kelly found the net at a crucial stage and after a point from Captain Emer Horan the teams were level. Bornacoola got another point to put them back in front. After the introduction of our young talented Aoife McWeeney, Regina Bohan converted two more frees. Siobhain put over another point to leave Kiltubrid two points ahead. Helen Tighe added another point, but Bornacoola fought back with a last point to leave the final score 1-8 to 1-6. Shelia Guckian was outstanding in goals, making numerous great saves. Great praise must also go to our backs who made some excellent blocks and defended well at all times in the game. Our mid-fielders worked tirelessly throughout the game, giving good supply to the forwards, all of whom scored. County Chairperson Mary Shanley presented a beautiful new cup to Captain fantastic Emer Horan!! We had great support on Sunday morning, thanks to all who came out to support the team. Thanks to Gerties, Kesh for the delicious meal afterwards. A great night was had by all!!!

  • Masters
Hard luck to the county masters team who were beaten by Dublin in the All-Ireland Final replay last Saturday in Breffni Park, Cavan. Once again Kiltubrid were represented by Prioncias Reynolds and Seamus Tighe on the panel.
  • Under 16
Well done the Kiltubrid Under 16 team who captured the 9 a-side championship with victory over Ballinagleara in Fenagh last Friday evening on a score line of 4-6 to 4-2. The game opened with Ballinagleara taking the lead courtesy of a Barry Maguire long range effort before Dermot McKeon leveled matters with a fine point out on the wing. A Ballinagleara goal and point put distance between the sides before Dermot McKeon closed the gap with cheeky goal effort which deceived keeper Gerard McGourty. This goal was quickly followed by points from Kealan McKeon and Connor McGaughran before Ballinagleara cancelled them out with a goal. Before half time Anthony Tighe showed great skill to flick the ball up into his hands off the ground before firing to the net. This left Kiltubrid with a one point lead at the interval.

  • The second half opened up with both sides exchanging wides in the opening few minutes before Connor Gaughran linked well with Kealan McKeon to find McKeon in a great position and he dually finished to net. Gaughran added a point while Dermot McKeon landed a great long range effort over the bar before Anthony Tighe found possession out on the 45 yard line flag and made inroads running unchallenged at the Ballinagleara defence before scoring an excellent solo effort. With time nearly up Dermot McKeon showed his scoring prowess with another long range effort from over 40 yards out. Ballingleara at this stage looked dead and buried but in the dying minutes of the game they found the net twice to make for an exciting finish. But Kiltubrid held strong after keeping Ballinagleara scoreless for nearly all of the second half thanks to a strong Kiltubrid defence.

  • Best for Kiltubrid were Dermot McKeon who showed his scoring ability when he found gaps in the Ballinagleara defence, Shane Cardiff battled well at midfield using his strength to great effect, in the forwards Anthony Tighe showed great class in the way he took his two goals while the excellent defending by Dominic Keaney and Ronan Geogeghan held firm in the face of pressure especially in the closing minutes. Team – Neil Slevin, Dominic Keaney, Ronan Geogeghan, Mark McWeeney, Dermot McKeon(Capt)(1-03) Shane Cardiff, Anthony Tighe (2-0), Kealan McKeon (1-1), Connor Gaughran (0-2). Subs used – Gavin Kelly, Kieran Murray. The rest of the championship panel was – Emmett Mahon, Michael Murphy, Michael Geogeghan, Daniel Tighe, Daniel McGirl and Prioncias Gilmartin.

  • KILTUBRID LADIES NOTES
  • U.12’s Retain County Title.
Congratulations to our U.12 Girls who took their second county U.12 title in a row, by defeating Annaduff in Dromod last Saturday. The girls were very slow in settling down, and allowed Annaduff build up a big lead before getting a score on the board, but Sinead Mc Keon got us off the mark with a great goal and point, to leave the half time score 2-4 to 1-1 in favour of Annaduff which could have been bigger only for Michelle Byrne who was outstanding in defence and kept us in the game. The second half was a different story as our girls got more into the game. Stacey McLoughlin replaced Avril McGovern who had worked hard in the backs, and Ciara McWeemey replaced Lisa Devlin who worked very hard in the forwards. Annaduff got the opening point, but from there on Kiltubrid dominated with Rachel Gill winning everything that came her way at the back , Aine and Niamh Tighe worked very hard at mid-field to win possession and set up attacks which resulted in scores and with 12 minutes gone in the half the teams were level, thanks to points from Aine and Ciara and a great goal from Aine. Sinead McKeon kept the pressure on up front and we went into a 3 point lead, but Annaduff did not give up and our keeper Aisling McGourty was busy keeping her line cleared. Sinead got another point after hard work from Karen Murray and Ciara . Kiltubrid finished with a free converted by Aine and Annaduff scored another point to leave the final Score Kiltubrid 2 – 10 Annaduff 2 – 6.

  • Annaduff Credit Union Chairman James McKeon presented the cup to Captain Aine Tighe and great celebrations took place. Team; Aisling McGourty, Avril McGovern, Rachel Gill, Michelle Byrne, Aine Tighe, Niamh Tighe, Sinead McKeon, Karen Murray, Lisa Devlin, Stacey McLoughlin, Ciara McWeeney, Sinead McGourty, Catriona Cardiff, Roisin Judge, Chloe Devlin.
